Safety Features

Seat Belts and Head Restraints

In 2015, the use of seat belts in passenger vehicles saved an estimated 13,941 lives of occupants 5 and older. An additional 2,804 lives would have been saved in 2015 if all unrestrained passenger vehicle occupants 5 and older involved in fatal crashes had worn their seat belts. Head restraints were installed in passenger cars largely in response to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 202. The purpose of a head restraint is to prevent whiplash injury of the neck in rear impact crashes.

Air Bags

Air bags are supplemental restraints and are designed to work best in combination with safety belts. Both frontal and side-impact air bags are designed to deploy in moderate to severe crashes. Air bags reduce the chance that an occupant's upper body or head will strike the vehicle's interior during a crash.
